What are U doing this summer?

• Are you finishing school this year, or did you finish school last year?
• Are you aged 16 to 18 years?
• Are you still not sure what you will be doing after August 2008?
• Are you still looking for job, place at college or a training course?
• Do you feel that you could do with some help and advice about what to do next?
• Do you want to have a fun packed summer?

If you can answer yes to these questions, then the U Project is for you….

The Youth Service is running the U project again this year. The project is aimed at those young people who have yet to make any positive choices regarding their education, employment or training options.

This year we have 40 places for young people who left school this year or last year.

We will work alongside young people to create a summer programme designed to meet their needs to find a place in education, employment or training and have a fun summer.

For further information about the project, please contact Richard Young or Andy Caine at the Youth Engagement Team.

11/06/08: U-Project - One person’s experience.

Sean Doyle was referred to the U Project in 2006 through his Connexions Advisor. He’d left school and wasn’t sure about what he wanted to do next.
College wasn’t an option he’d thought about, and he hadn’t worked other than doing some casual labouring.

When he joined the U Project he met other young people in the same or similar situations.
He discovered he had the confidence to take on new challenges, from writing his CV, to balancing on high ropes at Stubbers, to filling out an application form.

Youth workers Rick, Louise and Carla gave Sean every encouragement and supported him in looking for information about careers which interested him.

Since taking part in the U Project Sean has enrolled at College on a full time Plumbing course, and is working part time.

" The U Project helped me find out what I wanted to do, not what everyone else wanted me to do."

24/04/08: Stubbers 2007

Once again Havering Youth Support Service gave young people an opportunity to take part in a programme of activities aimed at helping them find work, education or training.

During the summer young people took part in a range of activities such as teambuilding and fun days out.
The programme also included careers advice, C.V. building and guidance from the connexions/P.A.Y.P P.A’s aimed at enhancing their potential to engage with employment, education or training.

One of the highlights of this years programme was a residential experience at Stubbers outdoor pursuits centre, where for two weeks all the groups came together to take part in a joint experience.
This involved camping and activities such as raft building, climbing, problem solving and an evening programme designed to improve young people’s basic skills and confidence. Here are some of the comments from those that took part:

“ I have learnt to respect other people’s opinions.”

“ I have found out new things about myself and other people.”

“ I have learnt new skills and beaten my fears.”

“ What a fantastic time. I have met the nicest people ever. I will miss you all. I Have enjoyed every moment.
Thank you so much.”

“ The best thing about the project is it gives you tones of confidence. It helps you understand things that you haven’t really got a big view on the things you don’t understand properly.”

Watch out for information on this website about the U Project 2008 and if you’re a year 11 school leaver, and you think it will help you out, have a word with your youth worker.
