A project has started in Romford that is offering
a unique opportunity to all graffiti/urban
artists in Havering.
The project aims to provide a space in the borough where graffiti/urban art
can be practised, without fear of arrest or being labelled “anti-social.”
The space in question is a long section of wall that runs alongside the river
Rom in central Romford. It has been known and used by urban artists or writers
as they are otherwise known, for a long time and they are now seeking permission
to practise legally.
It is hoped that if the group are successful in achieving
their aims, graffiti will be channelled away from areas where it is unwanted,
and into a safe designated area, where it can be practised and developed as
an accepted art form.
With close support from the Youth Involvement Team, the artists have started
a campaign process and are gathering more support by the day. The group have
been busy promoting their work with live art displays at the Planet
Havering,
Teen Spirit and TMF festivals. This has caught the attention of the local press,
with a very positive and supportive article in the Romford Recorder (July 16th
04.)
The campaign has also gained support from Havering Councils Deputy
Leader and Lead Member for Culture, Cllr. Andrew Curtin, who commented,
“ The young people in this group are very creative, dynamic and positive
in what they are doing. I am very keen to support them. I think there should
be more spaces made for them to make their positive contribution.”
He has also agreed to officially meet with the group to discuss the future
of this project.

project then watch this space, and if you would
