The Voluntary Youth Work Sector in Havering is complex, wide reaching and ranges from small one night a week projects to large organisations with several paid employees. There are Marching Bands, Cadet Corps, Drama Groups, Majorette Troops, MC & DJ Projects, Special Needs Support Groups, Sports Clubs, Scouts and Guides as well as the ‘usual’ youth clubs.
The age range is equally wide and typically covers 6 to 25 years of age, and, with over 300 voluntary youth groups registered in Havering, you are never far from a voluntary youth organisation.
No matter what size, voluntary youth organisations often need professional support and that is my job. My involvement with voluntary organisations ranges from occasional visitor to member of the management committee and sometimes I am brought in to help solve emergencies or one off problems.
Generally I advise voluntary youth organisations on how to set up and run their youth provision, help them to identify training for their staff, how to locate resources and, most importantly, funding for their project.
To further assist my support of the voluntary youth sector, I administer two grant funds, a small Training Grant Fund to reduce the cost of training voluntary staff and a Project Grant Fund to support voluntary youth groups with the cost of putting on that special event or programme of events.
Finally, to promote the link between the statutory (council) youth services and the voluntary youth sector, I have been seconded to the Havering Association of Voluntary and Community Organisations as their Youth Development Advisor.
